Water and Wastewater Department

Overview

The Water and Wastewater Department operates and maintains the City of St. Ignace's Water Treatment Plant and Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Department also maintains the Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection lines, with the assistance of DPW. Our distribution system covers almost the entire City of St. Ignace, with service provided to St. Ignace Township, Evergreen Shores, and extends to the Sault Tribe Housing and Casino properties.

The Water Treatment Plant and responsibilities, were purchased from Edision Sault Electric in 1979.  Edison Sault Electric had owned and operated the Water system since 1930, when they purchased the system from the City of St. Ignace.

The existing Water Treatment Plant was built in 1983, with the Direct Filtration improvements done in 1994.  Since then the City treats surface water from Lake Huron.  Our treatment process includes the addition of Soda Ash, to deal with pH issues, Alum, to help in the coagulation of dirt particles in the water, then to 4 individual filters which allow our water to provide a very high quality drinking water to the City of St. Ignace and surrounding townships connected to our system.  We meet or exceed all requirements by Michigan Department of Natural Resources Environmental section.  Consumer Confidence Reports (CCR) will have all the information on our water quality.
